What is the best way to take vitamins?

Many people have not been taught how to take vitamins. Here is the 411 to get the most out of your multi-vitamin:

  1. Take it everyday
  2. Take it with food to prevent nausea
  3. Take it at the end of a meal to help absorption
  4. Continue taking it, even if you forget and skip one or more days

To learn more, please read the Clinician's Corner post, "Is There a Best Way to Take Vitamins?" on our Go Folic! Blog.

How do I know if my multi-vitamin has enough folic acid?

Go Folic! Multis have 800 mcg of folic acid. You may already be taking a daily multi-vitamin that you like. If so, you can check the label to see if it has enough folic acid. One serving should have 400 mcg or 100% of the RDA for folic acid.

How can I get more folate in my diet?

Folate is the form of folic acid in food. The following foods are high in folate: leafy greens, beans & lentils, peanuts and sunflower seeds, orange juice, berries, and avocados. Click here to get a longer list (will come up in a new browser window). Click here for some tasty recipes (PDF file).
