GO FOLIC! Challenges SF Women to Give Themselves the Gift of Health: Go Active! for 30 Minutes a Day in May

GO FOLIC! believes all women deserve the gift of health. In addition to taking a multi-vitamin and eating better, our bodies need to move. That's why GO FOLIC! supports the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports in honoring National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week. And San Francisco is a great place to be active. According to a 2008 report released by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), San Francisco was the fittest big city in America!

During the month of May, GO FOLIC! challenges San Francisco women to Go Active! with 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Physical activity not only increases your chances of living longer, it also reduces your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer. It will also:

  • Help you sleep better
  • Handle stress
  • Give you stronger bones
  • Lower your risk of depression

Moderate activity includes walking fast or dancing for pleasure. Experts also recommend that women do strengthening activities, like situps and pushups, at least 2 days a week.

The President's Challenge Website includes the following easy ideas for increasing physical activity:

  1. If your neighborhood's safe, walk in a nearby park
  2. Take the stairs instead of the elevator
  3. Bike or walk to work or to run errands
  4. Do some spring cleaning
  5. Walk with a friend during your lunch break
  6. Play tag with your kids
  7. Remember being a kid: see how many jumping jacks you can do
  8. Sign up for a group exercise or dance class
  9. If you have a yard, do yard work
  10. Take your dog out for a walk

No matter what shape you are in, get more active during the month of May! Sunday Streets provides great opportunities for getting active in San Francisco.
